A New Chapter in the Field of Energy Storage-Flow Battery

The popular definition of a flow battery is an energy storage technology in which an active material exists in a liquid electrolyte. The flow battery is mainly composed of three parts, the outer electrolyte tank and the inner electrode and ion conducting membrane. The electrolyte is placed in the storage tank outside the stack, and flows through the stack under the push of the circulating pump, and the electrochemical reaction occurs, so as to realize the conversion of chemical energy and electrical energy.

Energy is an important material basis for human survival and development, is an important factor in promoting economic development. However, the traditional fossil energy consumption is increasing, and the energy storage is gradually exhausted. And in the use of the process has brought serious environmental pollution. The development of renewable clean energy has become a top priority. However, the inherent randomness, intermittence, volatility, difficulty in direct grid connection and other characteristics of renewable energy, such as wind energy and solar energy, limit the development and utilization of renewable energy. It is necessary to develop the corresponding energy storage technology to realize the stable output of renewable energy and realize the grid connection. Flow battery is a kind of high safety, high cost performance, high energy efficiency and long life scale energy storage technology, which can realize large-scale energy storage on the premise of ensuring the storage of intermittent energy such as solar energy, wind energy and tidal energy. Electrical energy can also be converted from off-peak demand periods to peak demand periods, thereby maintaining a stable balance of electricity consumption and enhancing the stability of the grid.

Characteristics of flow batteries

① Long cycle life. The electrochemical reaction of the active material of the flow battery is generally less polarized, highly reversible, and there is no self-discharge problem in the storage process of the ordinary battery, and the storage life is long.

High security:Flow batteries generally use an aqueous solution system with no potential explosion and combustion hazards and good safety.

③ Easy adjustment of scale capacity:The capacity density of the flow battery is only related to the volume concentration of the electrolyte, and the power density is only related to the size and number of the stack. Therefore, by increasing the size and number of the stack, the output power can be increased; by increasing the volume of the electrolyte, the energy storage capacity density can be increased.

Classification of flow batteries: Flow batteries can be divided into all-vanadium flow batteries, sodium polysulfide/bromine flow batteries, zinc/bromine flow batteries, and zinc/iron flow batteries according to different active substances. Among them, the flow battery with the highest market share and the most successful commercialization is the all-vanadium flow battery. Zinc/bromine flow batteries have also begun to enter the market, while other flow batteries are still in the research stage.
